Why Ugly Dog Adventures Is Different From Every Other Pack Walk Company
By Jennifer Patten, Founder of Ugly Dog Adventures
When I started Ugly Dog Adventures back in 2008, there wasn’t anything else like it — and to this day, there still isn’t.
Sure, there are other dog walkers. And yes, there are companies offering group walks or basic socialization. But nobody does what we do, the way we do it. After 18+ years of working with dogs, building real relationships with our clients, and creating a system that prioritizes the emotional, physical, and behavioral health of every dog we walk, I can confidently say this: we’ve built something truly special.
Let me show you why.
⸻
🐾 1. We Don’t Just Walk Dogs — We Lead a Balanced, Structured Pack
Ugly Dog Adventures isn’t just about taking your dog for a stroll. Our pack walks are structured, intentional, and transformational. Every single walk is a training opportunity. Our dogs walk in a calm, focused, and respectful state. They’re not just sniffing around — they’re learning to coexist peacefully with other dogs, to follow a leader, and to practice impulse control in real-world environments.
We use a rotating variety of parks, neighborhoods, and walking trails across Orange County. The changing environments help keep the dogs mentally stimulated and adaptable.

⏱️ 2. We’ve Been Doing This Since 2008 — Before “Pack Walks” Were a Thing
When I first started, the phrase “pack walk” wasn’t something most people had heard of. We were doing it before it was trendy — because it worked. And it still does.
Over the years, we’ve refined our system, built trust with hundreds of families, and developed a reputation for real results. Our longevity isn’t luck. It’s built on consistency, care, and results.
⸻
👥 3. Our Team Isn’t Just Staff — They’re Trained, Trusted Dog Handlers
Every member of our team is hand-picked and trained in our methods. These aren’t gig workers grabbing leashes. They’re dedicated dog handlers who learn how to lead a pack, interpret canine behavior, de-escalate tension, and reinforce calmness.
We’ve trained hundreds of dogs that other companies wouldn’t touch — leash-reactive dogs, anxious dogs, overly excited dogs. We don’t just “hope for the best.” We use structure, repetition, and leadership to help dogs settle into the pack and thrive.
⸻
🎓 4. Evaluations Are Thoughtful, Not Rushed
Before any dog joins our pack walks, we do a two-part evaluation:
1.Initial Meet-and-Greet at the Park
2.Test Pack Walk to see how they do with our crew
This isn’t a formality — it’s a genuine process that ensures every dog is a good fit and that their experience will be positive. We care about the safety and emotional health of all dogs involved.
⸻
🚫 5. We Don’t Let Dogs Pull, Lunge, or Tune Out
This one’s big. Many companies let dogs pull on the leash, bark, or walk in whatever direction they want. That’s not us. Ugly Dog Adventures walks look different — calm, focused, synchronized.
We reinforce respectful leash behavior in real-world environments with real distractions. That’s why our clients often say things like, “My dog walks better with you than with me!” It’s not magic — it’s consistency, boundaries, and leadership.
⸻
🧠 6. We Integrate Behavior Work into Everything We Do
Because we’re also professional trainers, we incorporate behavioral tools into every walk. Whether your dog struggles with reactivity, fear, overexcitement, or insecurity, we know how to manage it in a healthy, productive way — and we pass that benefit along to every client.
We’re not just exercising your dog — we’re shaping their mindset.
⸻
🐶 7. This Is Our Passion — Not a Side Hustle
Ugly Dog Adventures is my full-time life’s work. I’ve dedicated nearly two decades to helping dogs and the people who love them. I know every dog’s name, history, personality, and quirks. I watch them transform over time. This isn’t just a business — it’s my purpose.
And I’ve built it alongside my partner Larry, who leads our training programs and works with many of the dogs you see on our pack walks. Together, we’ve created a unique blend of high-level dog training and real-world socialization that no other company offers.
⸻
🌟 8. Our Dogs Don’t Just Walk Together — They Grow Together
Over time, our pack dogs become a unit. They learn how to adjust to each other, support each other, and co-exist with confidence. We’ve seen shy dogs blossom. We’ve seen reactive dogs calm down. We’ve seen energetic dogs learn patience. It’s a transformation — not a transaction.
⸻
❓ “But Can’t I Just Walk My Dog Myself?”
Yes — and you should! Daily walks with your dog are a beautiful part of your relationship.
But let’s be clear: walking your dog on your own is nothing like what happens during a structured Ugly Dog Adventures pack walk.
These are two completely different experiences. Walking your dog is one-on-one time — it’s great, but it doesn’t challenge or develop the same skills. A structured pack walk offers:
•Immense social learning
•The chance to read and respond to canine energy
•Exposure to group dynamic training
•Lessons in impulse control, calmness, and structured engagement
It’s enrichment on a completely different level — something you simply can’t replicate on your own. And when it’s done correctly, with leadership and intention, the power of the pack becomes one of the greatest gifts you can give your dog.
We’ve seen it over and over again: dogs come alive, gain confidence, settle their nerves, and grow into balanced, joyful companions — because of the pack.
